"I Gotta Be Me"
(Feb 7, 2008)
-
When Roslyn Kind took to the
stage in Los Angeles on February 2, she teased her audience
with a few bars of "People." Abruptly though, she
transitioned instead into a stirring rendition of "I Gotta
Be Me." Thus, Roslyn Kind set the tone of the riveting 90
minute performance: this was going to be her show. No
reliance on her relation to sister Barbra Streisand was
needed for Roz to pull off a triumphant performance at the
Catalina Jazz Club. Indeed, her Barbra references were few.
She didn't perform any songs automatically associated with
Barbra, but referring to her sister as Mrs. Brolin, spoke
briefly about the two of them recently spending some quality
time together in London. That was it. It was time for Roz to
command the spotlight all by herself. |
Roz was accompanied
by a three piece piano, bass and drums combo. Her set included
classic ballads such as "The Man That Got Away," "Somebody Loves
Me" and "Come What May," among others. Her rendition of "How Do
You Keep The Music Playing" was simply beautiful, while "What
Love Has Done For Me" brought the sold-out audience of about 150
to their feet.
Roz was dressed by Nolan Miller in a jeweled, off-the-shoulder
top with jeweled stripes on tuxedo styled pants. Miller was in
the audience and laughed when Roz teased him about the jewels
falling off.
Roz offered the song "At Times Like This" as a tribute to her
loving, now deceased pet puppy, whose photo adorned the piano.
She also reminisced about growing up in Flatbush, and spoke
lovingly about her grandmother who once told the young, up and
coming singer never to give up on her dreams. This perhaps
explains why Roz has decided to return to the nightclub circuit.
And what a triumphant return it was!

We would like
to thank Barbratimeless friend Lou Papalas for his
contributions to this review of Roz's performance, and for
allowing us to publish the photo of his meeting with Roz
after the show.
Lou is recognized as the foremost collector of Streisand
memorabilia, a fact that did not go unrecognized by Roz.
Lou told us, "When I went to Rozzie's dressing room and
asked her manager to see her, she announced my name, to
which Rozzie shried, 'He's the guy who buys all my
sister's costumes.' "
Among other Streisand treasures, Lou is the
owner the world famous "My Name Is Barbra" sailor themed
gown worn in the television show. For more information on
Lou and his collection, visit his website,
