Where Are They Now?: Elliott Gould

Barbra's co-star in "I Can Get It For You Wholesale"
Oh yeah, and they were married at one time, too. Most people
know the story of Barbra Streisand and Elliott Gould. After
meeting on the stage of New York's Shubert Theatre during the
run of I Can Get It For You Wholesale, Barbra and
Elliott instantly became an "item" in New York show business
circles, and in short order, they were married during one of
Barbra's out of town engagements. The inauspicious nuptials were
conducted at a civil ceremony in Carson City, Nevada on
September 13, 1963.
In 1964, Barbra was busy becoming the biggest talent Broadway
had seen in decades. A year later, as Funny Girl
continued to transform Barbra into an entertainment
superstar nightly at the Winter Garden, Elliott was performing
in his own musical just a few blocks away. His show was Drat!
The Cat and was poorly received by both critics and
audiences. The musical closed after just eleven previews and
eight performances, leaving Barbra as the only member of the
Gould household to be working on Broadway.
Of
course, all this was going on at the time when Barbra's star was
on its meteoric ascend, and nothing, not even her husband, could
catch up, much less, keep pace with it. Three years after the
birth of their son (Jason, in 1966), Barbra and Elliott were
separated. Their divorce became final in 1971.
But as things
turned out, the story of Elliott Gould's run in show business is
actually quite a good tale. He carved a successful niche as an
"alternative" actor in the 1970s with such films as "M*A*S*H.",
"Little Murders," and "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice," for which
Elliott received both Academy Award and Golden Globe
nominations. With six movies in release, Gould was a hot
property in Hollywood, and even made the cover of Time
magazine on September 7, 1970, joining Barbra in the ranks of
notable personalities who have graced its cover.
In a
twist of Hollywood irony, the paths of both of Streisand
husbands, past and future, crossed when they worked together on
a major studio film. The 1978 film Capricorn One starred
both Elliott Gould and James Brolin. The science-fiction film
was a modest success at the box office.
Elliott Gould is still very active in motion pictures and on
television. In 2000, his son Jason directed a short film called
Inside Out, and a small part was reserved especially for
dad. Elliott also had a critically acclaimed recurring
role on the NBC sitcom Friends a few seasons back. And
more recently, he appeared in several big budget motion pictures
with stellar casts. "American History X" paired Gould with Ed
Norton in a controversial drama about racial violence. But it
was his supporting role as the quirky Reuben Tishkoff in the
recent Oceans Eleven films that reminded movie goers that
Elliott Gould is not only alive and well, but thriving in
Hollywood.
Elliott will be back on the big screen next year, working once
again with the A-list of Hollywood. He is set to appear with
George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon in Oceans Thirteen.
Shooting begins this July.
