Feature: Passing the Torch: The Judy Garland Show
October
2003

On October 6, 1963,
Barbra Streisand made television history. She was the special guest on
"The Judy Garland Show," a landmark event in broadcast history. The show
was taped in Los Angeles on October 4 at CBS Television City. The show
was then aired nationally two days later. The historical importance of
the show is two-fold. First, it was the only time Barbra ever performed
with the legendary Judy Garland. Second, the show managed to bring
together three of the greatest musical divas of all time. Barbra sang
together with Judy and, in what seemed to be an unscripted cameo
appearance, Ethel Merman. It was as if Judy and Ethel were welcoming
Barbra into their exclusive sorority. The appearance of the two veteran
performers with newcomer Barbra was a symbolic "passing of the torch."
The New
Belter
Barbra's appearance on The
Judy Garland Show was one of those moments in entertainment that just
seemed destined to happen. Their paths crossed in a moment of early
television that many consider to be one of Barbra's best (she was even
nominated for an Emmy). And that particular episode is one of the most
significant television episodes of all time. With Judy clutching tightly
on to Barbra's hand, the two performed a duet that used both of their
signature songs as a foundation. Their "Happy Days / Get Happy" number
will always be remembered for the warmth and affection both Judy and
Barbra displayed towards one another.
When Ethel Merman paid an unscheduled visit to the set during taping, a
most extraordinary moment of convergence happened. Three of the greatest
singers who ever lived found themselves on the same stage and performed
together for the one and only time. History was captured.
To this day, Barbra speaks fondly of her experiences on the show and her
unwavering admiration of Judy Garland has never diminished. During her
One Voice concert in 1986, Barbra paid tribute to Judy by singing
"Over the Rainbow" and referring to Judy as "one of the greatest singer
who ever lived." |
