Our
Radio
Survey
October 8, 2010
On August 1, 2010, we
began an informal
(and quite non-scientific) study
of present-day
Streisand radio air play. What we
learned is that Barbra
Streisand's music is still a
favorite choice of
contemporary DJs and program
directors around
the world. We also discovered
that certain stations keep
Barbra on their permanent
play-list rotations. Several of these same stations play Streisand
multiple times a day.
As for which songs get on the
air these days, well it's no
surprise that traditional Streisand hits like "Evergreen" and "The
Way We Were" get the most attention by station programmers.
Barbra's often overlooked hit, "Stoney End" is also popular with
listeners. And tracks from her latest #1 album, "Love Is The
Answer" are showing up on both adult contemporary and all-jazz
stations.
Barbra's music is prominent on
international airwaves, too.
Recently, we were pleased to hear "Don't Rain On My Parade" and
"I'm The Greatest Star" on separate live broadcasts from the UK. Barbra is
also a
favorite with local
broadcasters in such countries as
Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Poland,
France, and even South Africa
and Trinidad & Tobago, to name a few. In
recent weeks, we've heard
Barbra's music (usually her
international hit, "Woman In
Love") on stations from each of
these countries.
Our data is presented in the
scroll-box at left. We
will continue to compile
information until the end of October, which will provide a three month
snapshot of Barbra's air play. Each
station we've documented is a traditional over-the-air
broadcaster. For purposes of
this study, we've excluded
Streisand air-play on the
ever growing network of
internet-based stations which,
incidentally, is quite
significant.
If you want to tune to live radio stations
whenever and wherever a Streisand song is being played, we
recommend the
Tunein Radio app
for your smart phone. We
used it for our survey and it did the job quite nicely.
