Barbra for Your Smart Phone? App-solutely!

Feature/July 2010

More than just a passing fad, smart phone use has become an essential part of daily life.

There are a few apps all Barbra fans may want to install on their mobile devices, including iPads.

There's a "Barbra App" for That

July 13, 2010
If you're like a lot of people, you are the owner of an iPhone, or perhaps an Android or one of a countless variety of other smart phones that are available out there. And like those same people, you've probably loaded your device with dozens of innovative apps that you carry with you 24/7.

As a Barbra fan, there are a few apps that you might want to consider installing. We downloaded these apps and can tell you that each is first rate. All of these Barbra-friendly apps are available at the iTunes App Store and are compatible with Apple's iPhone. For other smart phones users, check to see if these same applications are available for download to your specific device.

Keep an eye out on ...

Paramount-100

January 15, 2012 - To celebrate their 100th anniversary, Paramount Pictures has just released a pretty nifty iPhone/iPad app containing information and photos from hundreds of their films.  Movie buffs will enjoy combing the app's extensive data base.

But if you're a Barbra fan, forget it. Paramount has chosen not to include On A Clear Day You Can See Forever among the many films featured in their app. Perhaps the oversight will be corrected once someone remembers that Barbra is back on Paramount's payroll.

For now, we recommend keeping this app on your future download list. Paramount is sure to add a fairly decent feature on My Mother's Curse at some point in the coming months.

The Apps

V Magazine
Here's a solution for those who can't find the print edition of V magazine's Spring 2012 edition. Just go to the 'Newsstand' on your Apple device to install the app.

Two previously unpublished photos of Barbra (circa 1969, by Lawrence Schiller) accompany the brief article.  The stunning photos were taken in 1969 while Barbra was on location in London/Brighton for Clear Day.

(note: The app is free, but the magazine download costs $3.99.)

Elle Magazine for iPad
Here's a cyber-solution for those who can't find an actual print edition of Barbra's Elle magazine cover.

Install the Elle app on your iPad and download the November 2011 edition. There you'll get the complete issue, including both Streisand and Jennifer Aniston versions of the cover along with the complete article.

(note: The app is free, but the magazine download costs $3.99. The Streisand cover is not available on the iPhone version of the app).
Video Time Machine
This app ($.99) offers a friendly interface which allows users to search movie trailers, TV, news, music (and much more) just by scrolling through any year in the last century.

There's no "search for" box, but if you know your Barbra history, you'll also know which years to begin combing through to find interesting Streisand clips. Within five minutes, we found video from "The Judy Garland Show" (1963), "My Name Is Barbra" (1964), "Up the Sandbox" (1972), "A Star Is Born" (1976), "The Prince of Tides" (1991) and "Meet the Fockers" (2004).

HER Heart Health
As part of their continuing efforts to support research and education on the issue of women's cardiovascular health, Barbra Streisand and the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute have released a brand new app.

The app is free and is worth sharing.

The app is by no means sophisticated, but its message is crucial and deserves notice. And of course, if you download the app, you'll receive Barbra's public service video.

Sound Hound
Launch this clever app and hold your device next to any radio or music source. It will immediately recognize the song title and artist.

You can also manually search by song or artist to retrieve lyrics and videos. It works when you sing a few bars into your iPhone mic, too.

The app will even bring up all songs in your iPod that are a match. I never realized that there are some 28 tracks for "Evergreen" on my iPod. Cool.

Little Fockers
This is delightful little app is officially being offered by Universal Pictures to promote the film.

The app offers quite a few goodies for you to play with on your phone.

You can watch trailers, ask Roz Focker for advice, and even set Roz as one of your personal ring tones.

And the best thing is the price. Free.

AFI
The new American Film Institute app (free) offers a a series of video clips from their awards shows.

There's no search feature, but scrolling through the clips will reveal at least two Streisand moments.

You'll find Barbra's AFI acceptance speech along with another, perhaps more interesting clip: her video tribute to Warren Beatty and discussion about the McGovern concert.

Vevo Video
This is a great new app with loads of potential. Vevo Video (free) offers a dynamic catalogue of official music videos provided by all the top record labels, including Sony Music.

Our search for Streisand brought up two videos: "Somewhere" and "Evergreen" (from the Vanguard performance). Our hope is that Sony will eventually provide more, if not all of Barbra's official videos. For now, it's a nice start.

You can also access the complete Vevo library on your desktop at
vevo.com.

Lyrics Studio
The Lyrics Studio app ($.99) comes in handy for those of us who insist on knowing each word Barbra sings. Let's face it. Sometimes we miss a line here and there when listening to our Barbra CDs. With this app, the problem is solved.

The app offers an extensive database with words to hundreds of songs recorded by Barbra. Not every song is included (and there are a few errors), but users may note mistakes and suggest omitted songs. The app also provides a convenient link to corresponding YouTube videos.

Tunein Radio
The "Tunein Radio" app ($1.99) offers the ability to click and tune to several live radio stations throughout the U.S. & Canada (and some around the globe) whenever a Streisand song is being played.

You can also hear many Streisand related pod-casts, including discussions with Marvin Hamlisch, Lorraine Gordon, and others.

Finally, the app works just like a DVR. It has FF and REW features, and can record any live radio broadcast. It's a first for any radio app we've seen.

Life Mobile
The Life Magazine app (free) offers a treasure trove of iconic images from their archives.

Dozens of Barbra's images can be accessed and downloaded to your phone. They make great wallpaper images, too.

Some of the many categories to search for Barbra include:
- Grammys '70s & '80
- A Starlet is Born
- Oscars Star Couples

Glee (on AOL Radio)
If you're a fan of the television show "Glee" here's an app you will definitely want to carry with you. Glee Radio is one of the many stations carried on the on AOL Radio app (free).

With limited commercials, Glee Radio plays all the familiar tracks from the show, interspersed with those same tracks as recorded by the original artists.

As you might expect, Barbra Streisand's versions of those same "Glee" performances are often played.

Pandora
The Pandora radio app (free) is perhaps the best for music if you want to hear Barbra Streisand while on the go.

The app
allows you to create a personalized "Streisand Radio Station" that will not only stream Barbra to your phone, but also several other artists of a similar genre.

The best feature of Pandora is the ability to multi-task if you have the iPhone. While you are using other applications or your e-mail, the Pandora app continues to play in the background.

iBooks
The iBooks app (app is free - individual book costs vary) is a convenient way to read books on your device.

The books available on the app are limited, but they do have Tom Santopietro's recent Streisand bio, "The Importance of Being Barbra" ($9.99).

The novel, "The Prince of Tides" is there, too ($9.99). Included are several video's by author Pat Conroy who speaks about the autobiographical nature of his bestseller. Great stuff
.

iTunes Movies
At iTunes and you can download a number of Barbra's movies for play on your iPhone. We recently downloaded Clear Day for the bargain basement price of $4.99.

Other Streisand titles ($4.99 - $12.99) include: Funny Girl, Hello, Dolly, What's Up, Doc?, The Way We Were, A Star Is Born, The Main Event, Yentl ... and many more.
