First Streisand Film on BluRay

August 10, 2010
"What's Up, Doc?" was released on BluRay today, making this the first Streisand film title to become available in the new format.

For a film that was made decades before HD cameras were the norm, the transfer of "What's Up, Doc?" to BluRay is surprisingly good, if not perfect. The colors are vibrant and the soundtrack, crisp. And if you've a keen eye, there are a few set details you'll pick up that you might have missed in previous viewings, particularly when watching those magnificent San Francisco cityscapes whisk by.

Content-wise, there is nothing new that wasn't previously released on the 2003 standard DVD of the film. Bogdanovich's running commentary is still available as an extra feature, as are Barbra's "scene specific" observations. The two trailers are quite good, especially if you haven't seen them before.

If you already have a high-def setup at home, the new "Doc" BluRay is well worth getting. Otherwise, your standard DVD version of the film will do just fine.

Paid in Full
In the airport scene toward the end of "What's Up, Doc?", Judy offers to pay Howard $10 a week for messing up his chances to win the Larrabee grant:

"Well, I guess I owe you 20 thousand bucks. Listen, if I paid you off at $10 a week, we'd be even in 38 years and 5 and a half months."

Had she made those payments, Judy's debt would have been satisfied in ...
... 2010.

"As Time Goes By" indeed!
