"My Name is Barbra Streisand, and I'm an Actor"

October 17, 2011
Today, Elle magazine released a magnificent 10 minute documentary called Women in Hollywood. This coincides with Elle's special "Women in Hollywood" print edition. Jennifer Aniston (on newsstands) and Barbra Streisand (online and by subscription only, we're told) are on alternating versions of the cover.

To cap off the celebration, Elle hosted the L'Oreal Paris Legend Award gala in Los Angeles tonight. Barbra was an honoree alongside Aniston, Michelle Pfeiffer, Viola Davis, Evan Rachel Wood, Freida Pinto, Stacey Snider, Elizabeth Olsen and Naomi Watts.

Mutual respect was the order of the evening as Anniston and others professed their admiration of Barbra Streisand's lifetime achievements.

Barbra was a bit more humble telling the audience, "It's sort of interesting to be receiving the 'legend' award tonight. Even though some say I'm a legend in my own time, I'm not a legend in my own mind."

The Documentary
Barbra was a major participant in a specially produced companion documentary, filmed at her home on July 28, 2011 (at 8 PM, according to the filmmakers). A brief snippet of this video was released a few weeks ago, but the complete film, directed by Marcel Wepper, is what we're getting to see for the first time today.

Barbra has fun as she literally lets her hair down (yes, she takes off her hairpiece) while discussing the original Funny Girl outfit she chose to wear for the video shoot.

The video documentary includes on camera appearances by Jennifer Aniston, Viola Davis, Freida Pinto and other actresses, but it's the Streisand segments that will truly captivate.

Barbra has much to contribute. She talks about her favorite directors (Fellini, Kurosawa, Kazan, Bergman), favorite actresses ("Jane Fonda, she was great in Julia ... I loved Marilyn Monroe. I thought she was unique.") and shares some of her favorite movie quotes (from the film Jerry McGuire, and others).

Barbra also offers some philosophical musings as well. "Life is short and you just gotta play, dance, experiment, fail, succeed, learn, give."
