Bob Banner

People We Remember

Television Producer
Bob Banner, an assistant producer on "The Garry Moore Show," passed away at the age of 89.

Convinced Barbra to Sing "Happy Days"

June 17, 2011
On June 15, television producer Bob Banner passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 89. We mention his passing because of what we learned today about the unique role he played in Barbra's musical career.

Banner was working for "The Garry Moore Show" and was part of the production team when Barbra made her historic appearance in 1962.

According to the L.A. Times, it was Bob Banner who convinced Barbra to perform "Happy Days Are Here Again" as part of the show called That Wonderful Year. While we don't know if it was the first time Barbra performed the number professionally, it certainly was the first time she sang it in front of a mass audience.

The arrangement was unique and Barbra's performance of the number was delivered as a mini-melodrama. We have Bob Banner to thank for making that performance happen and for helping transform "Happy Days" into one of the most recognized of all Streisand signature songs.

Banner also worked with both Carol Burnett and Dinah Shore on their respective TV variety shows. In 1958, "The Dinah Shore Show" earned Banner an Emmy for directing (photo, top, with Loretta Young).

Bob Banner's influence on Barbra's "Garry Moore Show" performance was also noted this evening during the NBC Nightly News. Check it out here.
