Wrote "Spring Can Really
Hang You Up The Most"
July 26, 2011
Composer Fran
Landesman, one of Barbra's
friends from those early
nightclub days of the 60s,
passed away peacefully at
her home in London on July
23. She was 83.
Fran Landesman and her
husband Jay were running
The Crystal Palace in St.
Louis in 1961 when they booked a
young nightclub singer
from New York named Barbra
Streisand. Barbra's three
week engagement at The
Crystal Palace was a
landmark in her career.
While in St. Louis, Barbra
forged a solid friendship
with Fran, who was not
only a nightclub
proprietor, but also a
composer and performer in
her own right.
In 1961, Fran introduced
Barbra to a little song
she wrote called "Spring
Can Really Hang You Up The
Most." In her liner notes
for "Just for the Record,"
Barbra said,
"
'Spring Can Really Hang
You Up The Most' is one of
those songs that never
became a hit, but found an
enduring niche in many
singers' repertoires. The
lyrics were written by
Fran Landesman, whose
husband, Jay, owned the
Crystal Palace in St.
Louis. Fran played it for
me one night in 1961, when
I was working at the
club."
Barbra performed
"Spring Can Really Hang
You Up The Most" during
one of her appearances on
"The Tonight Show" (either
1962 or 1963). That
recording is available on
"Just for the Record."
Some forty-five years
later, Barbra re-recorded
the number and included it
on her #1 album, "Love Is The Answer."
Barbra also performed the
number during her live
appearance at New York's
Village Vanguard in 2009.
Fran Landesman's Husband,
Jay passed away earlier
this year.
