Bobby
Cannavale
Cast as
Nick
Arnstein
September
14, 2011
Those
who were wondering who
would be cast as Nick
Arnstein opposite Lauren
Ambrose in the new stage
production of Funny
Girl can rest easy.
It's television and stage
actor Bobby Cannavale. The
announcement was made
yesterday.
Cannavale received a Best
Actor Tony nomination for
his recent performance in
The Motherf**ker with
the Hat. But he
is perhaps better known to
wider audiences through
his breakout performances
as Will Truman's love
interest on the old NBC
sitcom, Will &
Grace.
On being cast as Nick
Arnstein, Cannavale said,
"This is a terrific role
for my musical theatre
debut and an exciting
challenge for me."
We just can't wait to read
those opening night
reviews.
Ambrose "Humbled and
Thrilled" to Star in
Funny Girl
August 4, 2011
In
a statement released
today, newly minted "Funny
Girl" star Lauren Ambrose
said,
"I
am humbled and thrilled by
the opportunity to be a
part of this revival. The
character is complex, the
music beautiful and
challenging."
And
director
Bart
Sher
offered some more breaking
news about the revival.
Looks like we can expect
to see some of those
original (out-of-town)
Styne-Merrill "Funny Girl" numbers
that never made it to
Broadway in 1964. Sher told the
L.A. Times that he wants
to enhance the show's
second act by possibly
including music that was
cut from the original
show.

"Funny Girl" numbers that
never made it to Broadway.
OFFICIAL: Lauren Ambrose
to Star in "Funny Girl"
August
3,
2011
The
producers
of
the
upcoming
Broadway-bound
revival
of
"Funny
Girl"
have
confirmed
that
Lauren
Ambrose
will
play
Fanny
Brice.
Bart
Sher,
who
will
direct
this
new
version,
warns
theatergoers
not
to
expect
a
Streisand
replication.
In a
statement
to
The
New
York
Times,
he
said,
"It’s
very
important
that
no
one
think
I
was
trying
to
cast
someone
to
replace
Barbra
Streisand.
Anyone
who
thinks
they’re
coming
to
see
the
next
Barbra
Streisand
should
not
come
see
‘Funny
Girl.’
"
Justifying
Ambrose
as
the
star
of
his
new
production,
Sher
goes
on
to
say,
“Lauren
was
the
only
person
I
saw
with
the
deepest
acting
skills,
the
capacity
to
sing
everything
in
this
role
and
an
emotional
richness
that
really
worked
for
Fanny
at
all
ages
...
It
was
a
wonderful
surprise.
She
wasn’t
honestly
a
front-runner
for
the
part
until
she
called
me,
asked
to
audition
and
came
in
and
blew
us
all
away.”
On
Broadway,
Ambrose
appeared
in
2009's
"Exit
the
King"
opposite
Susan
Sarandon,
and
"Awake
and
Sing,"
a
2006
drama
directed
by
Sher.
TV
viewers
will
know
Ambrose
from
her
role
on
HBO's
"Six
Feet
Under."

"Funny Girl"
Scheduled
for Jan.
2012
Opening
June
7,
2011
The
Ahmanson
Theatre
in Los
Angeles
has
officially
announced
performance
dates
(and a
new
logo)
for
its
much
anticipated
production
of
"Funny
Girl."
Shows
are
scheduled
for
Jan,
15 -
Feb
26,
2012.
Following
its
L.A.
engagement,
"Funny
Girl"
will
presumably
be
heading
to
Broadway
as
the
first
official
post-Streisand
revival
of
the
musical
ever
to
be
mounted
in
New
York.
As of now the role of
Fanny Brice has not been
cast, according to an
article in today's
L.A.
Times.
In fact, the article goes
on to say that on-line
audition tapes are still
being accepted by the
producers.
Unknown Fanny Brice
wannabees must be between the
ages of 21 and 35 and
possess a
"great voice, with a big
range; E below middle C -
high F. Mezzo with high
mix or belt."
Want to try out? The
producers have set up an
on-line audition page
here.
Lea
Brings "Funny Girl" to Tonys
June 13, 2010
Lea
Michele performed "Don't Rain On My Parade" on tonight's
Tony
Awards, changing one key line in the "Funny Girl" showstopper:
"Hey, Tony Awards, here I am."
Could this be a harbinger of things to
come in 2012? When asked on the red carpet about a return to Broadway, Lea,
who currently stars of the hit TV show "Glee" said,
"Let's get some offers."

Revival
June 8, 2010
According to an article in today's
The New York Times,
"Funny Girl" is scheduled for a Broadway return in the spring of 2012.
Producer Bob Boyett confirms that Bart Sher, who recently won a Tony for his revival of "South
Pacific" at Lincoln Center, is attached to the
project as director.
Casting has not been announced, but
Boyette thinks
Lea Michele would be great. He notes,
however, that "she's got a pretty good gig now on Glee."
Except for a benefit performance in 2002, "Funny Girl" has never been
revived on Broadway since the original production, which opened with
Barbra Streisand in 1964 and closed with Mimi Hines in 1967.
Can "Funny Girl" succeed without
Streisand?
