Barbra shows Mike Wallace
her old apartment |
Fourteen
years ago, Barbra Streisand appeared on "60 Minutes" and granted Mike
Wallace a no-holds-barred interview. Wallace's treatment of Streisand
has since become legend and stands as perhaps the most compelling
Streisand interview of all time.
One of the more interesting aspects of the Streisand appearance was when
Wallace and Barbra visited her old walk-up tenement apartment on Third
Avenue. |

Visiting the Old
Neighborhood
November 1, 2005
Many people have justifiably criticized Mike Wallace for his insensitive
treatment of Barbra during the notorious 60 Minutes interview of
November, 1991. Imagine telling an honored guest in your home that you did not
like them when you first met them. Wallace did just that in an attempt to
sensationalize the Streisand appearance. It worked, but it was a cheap shot.
Despite Wallace's
mean spiritedness, the interview
stands as one of the most fascinating profiles
of Barbra ever broadcast. The
highlight of the piece was
Barbra's
return to the Third Avenue
apartment she and Elliott
Gould shared during
their run in I Can Get It
For You Wholesale. Barbra not only returned to the street she lived on, but
arrangements were made for Barbra to visit with the current occupant for a quick
look around. It was a rare glimpse into Barbra's beginnings and of her life
before she hit the big time.
Barbra supports the
Thomas Wolfe adage that You Can't Go Home Again. But she did drop in, and
took us all along for a fascinating visit.
