Passing the Torch: The Judy Garland Show

Feature/October 2003

In 1963, Barbra Streisand appeared on The Judy Garland Show. The show managed to bring together three of the greatest musical stars of all time when Ethel Merman joined Barbra and Judy in a cameo.

"The New Belter"

October 15, 2003

Barbra's appearance on The Judy Garland Show was one of those moments in entertainment that just seemed destined to happen. Barbra and Judy's paths crossed in a moment of early television that many consider to be one of Barbra's best appearances (she was even nominated for an Emmy). And that particular episode is one of the most significant television episodes of all time. With Judy clutching tightly on to Barbra's hand, the two performed a duet that used both of their signature songs as a foundation. Their "Happy Days / Get Happy" number will always be remembered for the warmth and affection both Judy and Barbra displayed towards one another.

When Ethel Merman paid an unscheduled visit to the set during taping, a most extraordinary moment of convergence happened. Three of the greatest singers who ever lived found themselves on the same stage and performed together for the one and only time. History was captured.

To this day, Barbra speaks fondly of her experiences on the show and her unwavering admiration of Judy Garland has never diminished. During her One Voice concert in 1986, Barbra paid tribute to Judy by singing "Over the Rainbow" and referred to Judy as "one of the greatest singer who ever lived."

"Newer Belters" Pay Homage

October 12, 2010 (update)
The Streisand - Garland duet of "Happy Days/Get Happy" has achieved such iconic status that their historic performance has been stunningly replicated on a number of occasions.

Two of Broadway's current performers, Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald have performed the duet several times on television and in concert. LuPone, taking Judy's part, and McDonald, as Barbra, deliver a captivating tribute to the original artists that just has to be seen to be believed.

The Streisand-Garland performance has been replicated, yet again, in a spot on tribute by cast members of the television show Glee. On a 2010 episode, Lea Michele (performing Streisand) and Chris Colfer (performing Garland) delighted viewers with their rendition of the classic duet (above right).
