Barbra Streisand was front and center once
again, this time at a political benefit in support of presidential
candidate John Kerry. The event was held at the Disney Concert Hall in
Los Angeles and boasted an A-list of Hollywood celebrities, both on
stage and in the audience. The highlight of the evening, and probably
the reason donors had to shell out a minimum of $2,000 to attend, was
the much anticipated concert set by Barbra. She performed five songs
which included her classic duet with Neil Diamond. Barbra's delighted
her audience with renditions of "Smile," "Come Rain Or Come Shine,"
"You Don't Bring Me Flowers" (duet with Neil Diamond), "People" "I
Believe."
Keeping with
tradition, Barbra lambasted the Washington opposition with a reworked
version of one of her classics. This time, "People" received a
political makeover with new words by Alan and Marilyn Bergman.
Prior to the actual
concert, the top-tier benefactors were treated to a dinner with John
Kerry and the stars at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the former home
of the Oscars and a frequent Streisand performance venue in years
past. With Barbra on hand, Kerry spoke about the serious
need for a change of regime in the capital. Barbra was introduced
during the dinner and stood from her table to acknowledge Kerry.
During her performance
set, Barbra called on voters to make a change in November. Espousing
the virtues of Kerry's candidacy, Barbra reminisced of the 1960's when
JFK was in the White House. With hope in her heart, she predicted that
the next president would also be JFK - John Forbes Kerry.
The event reportedly
raised over $5 million for the Kerry coffers, making this candidate,
indeed, one of the Luckiest People in the World.
