"Doc" and "Pete" Cinematographer

July 23, 2007
Laszlo Kovacs, the master cinematographer who made Barbra Streisand shine so brilliantly in the film, "What's Up, Doc?", passed away on Sunday. His work as cinematographer will also live on in another Streisand film, 1974's "For Pete's Sake."

Without question, fans of "Doc" know that Barbra was captured at her most radiant, thanks to the magic of Kovacs. Kovacs never won an Oscar, though he was honored many times within Hollywood's technical circles. Some of his other more notable film credits include "Easy Rider" with Jack Nicholson, "Shampoo" with Warren Beatty and a stupendous display of his craft in Liza Minnelli's "New York, New York."

Barbra spoke about Kovacs in her commentary on the "What's Up, Doc?" DVD:

"Laszlo Kovacs was the cinematographer. I adored him. He was wonderful, caring., and knew how to light."
