Breaking Bread with Maya Angelou
May 22, 2006
So,
what
becomes
a
legend
most?
The
answer
became
clear
when
Oprah
Winfrey
broadcast
a
photo
of two
such
legends
together.
Dr.
Maya
Angelou,
writer,
activist,
poet
laureate
for
President
Clinton,
and
yes,
even
Grammy
winner,
has
much
in
common
with
Barbra
Streisand.
Both
women
strive
for
social
change
and
human
rights
through
their
respective
craft.
And
both
women
were
awarded
the
National
Medal
of
Arts
by
President
Clinton,
together,
in
2000.
Last
year,
these
two
legends
met
again
at a
luncheon
where
Dr.
Angelou
was an
honoree.
The
occasion was Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball, an event which honors
accomplished African American women. Barbra and James Brolin were
guests at the white tie event, and to
just
be in
such
extraordinary
company,
Barbra
herself
seemed
truly
honored.
Other guests included Sidney Poitier,
Tom Cruise, John Travolta,
Diane Sawyer,
Barbara Walters,
Quincy Jones,
and Senator Barack Obama. |
