Barbra's Co-Star in
"Wholesale"
November 4, 2005
Veteran actress
Sheree North (who costarred with Barbra Streisand in I Can Get It
For You Wholesale) passed away on November 4th at the age of 72.
Besides the stage, North worked steadily in Hollywood throughout the
years, appearing in numerous films and television shows. She received
two Emmy nominations, one for her appearance on the 1960s television
drama Marcus Welby, MD, opposite James Brolin.
North is best remembered by Streisand fans as the femme fatale in the
1962 production of I Can Get It For You Wholesale. Wholesale
was originally conceived as a showcase production for Elliott Gould.
And according to Arthur Laurents' autobiography, Sheree North was a
last minute replacement for the role of blonde bombshell Martha Mills.
But it was Barbra Streisand's breakout performance and rave reviews as
Miss Marmelstein that eclipsed both Wholesale actors and
actually kept the show alive on the New York boards for a respectable
run of 300 performances. Wholesale was revived in New York just
last month.
North began her career in the 1950s
with Hollywood touting her as the next Marilyn Monroe. While never
actually achieving that illustrious status, North did go on to work
with some of the biggest names in the business: Elvis Presley, John
Wayne, Sidney Portier, and Walter Matthau, among others. Sheree North
resided in Los Angeles. |
