Gems of The Paley Center
In
the mid 90s, The Museum of Television and Radio (now known as The Paley Center) hosted a month-long exhibition of Barbra Streisand's television performances. Their library contains dozens of important Streisand television performances and appearances.

Paley Center Gems

May 18, 2010
You may know The Paley Center for Media by one of its previous names (either The Museum of Television and Radio or The Museum of Broadcasting). With locations in New York and Beverly Hills, the Paley Center is one of the most exciting places to visit if you are a fan of television history. Their extensive data base includes many of television's important and culturally relevant programming since the inception of the medium.

Most of the programs are presented as complete episodes, not just clips or highlights, and many have the original commercials in tact. Each archived program in their collection is preserved in near pristine condition, and in most cases, replicates the exceptional quality of the original broadcast. As a visitor to the Paley Center, you are allowed access to this amazing library with on site viewing privileges.

We recently made a return visit to the Paley Center in Beverly Hills and were delighted at the opportunity to watch a few important Streisand television moments. Although you've probably seen much of what the center has to offer, here are a few true gems you might want to check out if you visit:

1.  1970 Tony Awards (NBC - April 19, 1970) - Barbra receives her Star of the Decade Tony award
2.  1967 Tony Awards (ABC - March 26, 1967) - Barbra presents the Best Musical Tony to Cabaret
3.  A World of Love (CBS - Dec 22, 1970) - TV special devoted to children. Barbra performs an alternate version of "The Best Gift"
4.  National Association for Retarded Children (ABC - Nov 10, 1970) - Barbra's public service announcement
5.  Funny Girl to Funny Lady (ABC - March 9, 1975) - Complete broadcast includes Streisand award commendation
6.  1965 Emmy Awards (Sep 12, 1965) - Barbra receives her first Emmy award (for My Name Is Barbra)

The center also plays host to a number of special seminars each year. In 1989, Producers Dwight Hemion and Gary Smith (My Name Is Barbra et. al) were on hand to discuss their extensive work in television. An archived video of that appearance, which included a discussion of their TV collaborations with Barbra, is also available for viewing.

The Paley Center archives dozens of additional Barbra Streisand television appearances. All of her specials are there - many with the original commercials - which adds an interesting historic element when watching them, even if you've seen these shows before. Barbra's appearances on The Barbara Walters Special and 20/20 can also be viewed, including her noteworthy interview (along side Jon Peters) on Walter's premiere episode back in 1975.

The Ed Sullivan Show appearances from the 60s are there, too. So are Barbra's guest shots on The Dinah Shore Show (1963), Singer Presents Burt Bacharach (1971), The Judy Garland Show (1963), The Rosie O'Donnell Show (1997), and Saturday Night Live (1992).

You can also watch the 1976 AFI Tribute to William Wyler (where Barbra honors her Funny Girl director) and The Stars Salute Israel at 30 (the 1978 TV special where Barbra performs for a world-wide audience, and chats live with Golda Meir).

These are just some of the highlights. There's much more to choose from when you're at the Paley Center. And leave plenty of time for your visit. Once you get started combing through their exceptional video library, you'll be hard pressed to leave.
