Production Designer for
"Doc" and "Star Is Born"
July 28, 2011 |
We have Polly Platt to
thank for the great designs of two successful Barbra
Streisand films. Platt was the production designer for both
"What's Up, Doc?" and "A Star Is Born."
Polly Platt passed away on
July 27 at her home in Brooklyn at the age of 72. She had
been suffering from ALS.
Polly Platt was married to (but estranged from) director
Peter Bogdanovich at the time "Doc" was being filmed and
together, they crafted a picture that took on a look and
feel of a genuine '30s screwball comedy.
Familiar with the master craftsmanship Platt brought to
"What's Up, Doc", executive producer Barbra
Streisand hired her as the production designer for "A Star Is Born." Platt's contribution to the picture
was one of the many elements that turned "Star Is Born" into
the most successful Streisand film at the time.
Polly Platt was also the production designer for
Bogdanovich's 1971 signature picture, "The Last Picture
Show." In 1983, she worked with director James L. Brooks on
"Terms of Endearment." For that picture, Platt received her one and only Oscar
nomination but came up empty handed on
Oscar night.
Polly Platt leaves behind the two daughters she had with
Peter Bogdanovich, along with their three grandchildren.

Remembers Polly Platt:
"She worked on important
pictures and made major
contributions ... She was
unique. There weren't many
women doing that kind of
work at that time,
particularly not one as well
versed as she was. She knew
all the departments, on a
workmanlike basis, as
opposed to most producers
who just know things in
theory."
