Barbra Slips In a Major
Announcement
November 4, 2008
In an effort to encourage Americans to
participate in this year's presidential election, Barbra Streisand has
lent her celebrity to a series of "get out the vote" messages,
appearing in recent days on both radio and television. Her first
message was in the form of a voiceover in a television public service
announcement for "Women's Voices - Women Vote."
On November 3rd and 4th, Barbra was a call-in guest on a series of
radio stations around the country. Here is the transcript from a
November 3 radio appearance on 105.7 in Indianapolis with host Scott
Wheeler. Toward the end of the conversation, Barbra made a major
announcement.
Scott Wheeler: On the phone right now, we are pleased to
welcome Miss Barbra Streisand. Miss Streisand, how are you today?
Barbra Streisand: I'm fine, thank you.
Wheeler: I'm sure, like most people, you're anxious for
the election tomorrow. It seems like this campaign has been going on
...
BJS: ... It's gonna be good to be over.
Wheeler: ...Yeah, I know, it's been going on a
long time.
BJS: Oh, my gosh, yeah.
Wheeler: Now, most people know you have some pretty
strong political opinions. Have you been politically active most of
your life?
BJS: Yes, I have. I've actually been a democrat all my
life, but I did support one republican, Mayor Lindsay in New York. He
was great.
Wheeler: Oh, okay, back in
the seventies.
BJS:
Yeah, exactly.
Wheeler: Saturday Night
Live has had a lot of fun with the candidates this year.
BJS:
Isn't she fabulous, this Tina Fey?
Wheeler:
Yeah. They've got another special tonight, the night before the
election.
BJS: What kind of special?
Wheeler:
I think they're calling it the pre-presidential bash, or something
like that.
BJS: What channel?
Wheeler:
NBC has it on.
BJS:
NBC? At what time?
Wheeler:
I think it's 9 o'clock here in the Midwest. Are you a fan of political
humor?
BJS:
Yeah.
Wheeler:
So when John
McCain sang some of your greatest hits on Saturday Night Live a few
years ago ...
BJS: ... I think that was
kind of pathetic.
Wheeler: You didn't throw
things at the TV, though, did you?
BJS:
No. That's always a compliment, don't you think?
Wheeler: Oh yeah. Well,
democrat, republican, libertarian, whatever a person happens to be, of
course, we're all Americans, and to make our system work we need to
take part in the process.
BJS: Absolutely. I just
hope that everyone goes out to vote and exercises that right and that
privilege to have a voice and a say in what our government should look
like. And I hope everybody is in tune and realizes that it's time for
a change and make the country prosperous again and get over this
crisis of confidence that everybody seems to be having.
Wheeler: I know we're all
hoping for the best for our country, no matter who wins. I have to ask
you, besides your singing career, you've made some very successful
movies. Do you have any new projects in the works right now?
BJS:
Well, I'll tell you the truth. For the last five years I've been
building a house. And that was much more difficult than directing a
movie. Oh my God.
Wheeler: Is it done?
BJS:
It's done. It's done now. Now I have to recuperate. I'm starting to
make an album next week with Diana Krall.
Wheeler:
Oh, really?!
BJS: Yeah, and this
election takes a lot out of me, you know?
Wheeler: Yeah.
BJS: I can't really rest
'till it's over.
Wheeler: Tomorrow is the
day.
BJS: Tomorrow is the day,
yeah.
Wheeler: Miss Streisand, a
pleasure to talk to you. Thanks for calling.
BJS: Thank you so much.
Bye bye.
Wheeler: There she is.
Barbra Streisand.
