"What Barbra Streisand proved to us was that art was beyond gender, and through it, one could rise right beyond this world and get to someplace better."  - Rosie O'Donnell, 2007

Barbra on the Rosie O'Donnell Show

November 4, 2007

Believe it or not, it really was ten years ago this month when Barbra Streisand was on Rosie O'Donnell's daytime talk show, her first of two such appearances. Rosie, who had been pleading with Barbra for years (almost on a daily basis) to be a guest on her show, was finally rewarded with a much publicized appearance. In accepting the invitation, some have said that Barbra was in essence thanking Rosie for the unparalleled support Rosie gave to some of her recent projects (such as "Higher Ground" becoming a #1 CD, thanks in a large part to Rosie's daily promotion of the album).

The much publicized Streisand appearance was the biggest event in the history of Rosie's six year run as daytime's favorite talk show host. Rosie lost her composure early in the broadcast, but finally pulled it all together in time to deliver one of the most memorable Streisand interviews of all time.

Rosie, whose late mother always played Barbra's music in the home, was overcome with emotion when Barbra arrived on stage. As Rosie told Barbra, seeing her was like seeing her own mother walk on stage. The two women wept openly, and Barbra wiped away both their tears.

Once composed, Rosie proceeded to interview Barbra as only a true fan could, reminding Barbra of the smallest details of her amazing career while Barbra looked on in astonishment. "You probably know more about me than I do," Barbra told Rosie as the two discussed Barbra's early Broadway career. Rosie took particular pride in letting Barbra know that she was born the night before "Wholesale" opened on Broadway.

Rosie and Barbra have forged a solid friendship since that first appearance. Rosie was invited to Barbra's home in California for a second interview which was broadcast on November 16, 1999. And in 2006, Barbra was Rosie's houseguest while in South Florida with her concert tour.
