Live from New York

February 26, 2011

It was twenty years ago this month when Barbra Streisand made her one and only appearance on Saturday Night Live. When it first premiered in 1975, few could have imagined that, 36 years later, SNL would still be going strong. Throughout the years, nearly every major star has had a stint on the show, either as a host, a musical performer, or in the case of Barbra Streisand, a surprise guest.

Barbra's 1991 walk-on was a shocker to audiences and cast members alike. Madonna and Roseanne Barr, performing the final moments of a familiar "Coffee Talk" sketch with Mike Myers were stunned when Barbra walked on. Myers and producer Loren Michaels are said to have been the only people at 30 Rock who actually knew the Streisand walk-on was going to happen. And when it did, not only was it great live television, but it became one of THE most iconic moments of the long SNL franchise.

It was also a moment when a bit of pop culture was born. Barbra was Like Buttah and Myers' "Linda Richman" was All Farklempt - phrases that have since become playfully associated with Barbra herself. Barbra even embraced the shtick when she and Mike Myers delivered their hilarious Linda Richman routine during several of Barbra's 1994 concerts.

Elliott Gould & Roslyn Kind
Long before Barbra appeared on SNL, former husband Elliott Gould had actually hosted the show an astounding 6 times. He hosted the show twice during the show's first season (1976) and returned to host four more times ('77, '78 and twice in '80). Gould held a record as the most frequent SNL guest host for quite a while.

For his third stint as host (1977), Elliott brought along sister-in-law Roslyn Kind (left) for her only appearance on the show. Elliott, who introduced her as "my son Jason's aunt, Rozzie Kind" was able to arrange for Roz to perform a ballad, even though the show already had another musical guest.

Barbra's "Not Ready for Prime Time" Co-Stars

Many people who have worked with Barbra throughout the years have hosted the show. In just the first few seasons alone, you'd be amazed at the number of Streisand co-stars (past and future) who landed the SNL hosting gig. They even convinced Walter Matthau to dress up for one of John Belushi's iconic "Killer Bee" sketches.

Here are a few of our favorites who hosted SNL during the seventies in various sketches with SNL's original Not Ready for Prime Time Players:

Kris Kristofferson (1976)

w/Jane Curtin
Madeline Kahn (1977)

w/Gilda Radner
Michael Sarrazin (1978)

w/Dan Aykroyd

Richard Dreyfuss (1978)

w/Laraine Newman, Aykroyd & Curtin
Walter Matthau (1978)

w/John Belushi
Maureen Stapleton (1979)

w/Newman & Curtin

In case you want to check them out on Hulu or Netflix, here's a list of all the Streisand co-stars who have hosted SNL (including Louise Lasser, ensemble cast member in "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" and understudy for Miss Marmelstein). We've also listed both hosting appearances by Seth Rogen, who will next co-star with Barbra in "My Mother's Curse."
