The Sweet Smell of Success

Feature/August 2004

August 15, 2004

Barbra was the darling of the gossip columns back in the 1960s. Usually with good intent, Barbra's comings and goings were watched closely and reported enthusiastically. Her every move, it seemed was documented by the entertainment reporters. Before Liz Smith and Cindy Adams brought their sensationalistic brand of journalism to the scene, there were the likes of Army Archerd, Dorothy Manners and Earl Wilson. Their spin on reporting was factual, anecdotal, lighthearted and always positive.

Here are some quotes - a sampling of what readers of the New York tabloids saw in the 1960s regarding the rising career and ever intriguing life of their favorite hometown girl-made-good.
