Going
Down the Stoney End
January 12, 2009
One of the more interesting Streisand locations, and certainly the
most picturesque, is Sunrise Mountain, located on the outskirts of Las
Vegas and
an easy 20 minute drive from The Strip. It was amid this brush
landscape of the Mojave desert where Barbra sat for the
Stoney End
album cover.
It's easy to drive out to the mountain where you'll
immediately recognize the unique vista. The cover of
Stoney End will
come to life before your very eyes as you inch closer toward the
foothills.
So hop in your vintage pick-up (preferably candy apple red, sofa
optional), crank up the album and head out to Sunrise Mountain for a
visit to one of the most unique of all Streisand-related locations.
How to Get to Sunrise Mountain

From the Vegas Strip, head east on Tropicana Blvd.
At Boulder Highway, make a right.
Continue on Boulder Hwy until Russell Road.
Make a left on Russell Rd.
Continue to Broadbent Blvd.
Make a left on Broadbent Blvd.
Take the first right into UNLV Sam Boyd Stadium.
You'll see Sunrise
Mountain on your left.
Drive around the unpaved roadway (literally a "stoney
end" - and the exact location where we suspect the album
cover shoot took place). Park at Bill Bennett airfield.

(UPDATE) -
The Los Angeles Times
has reported the death
of
Barry Feinstein,
one of the most famous of all rock
'n' roll photographers.
In 1970, Barbra sat for
Feinstein (in the back of
a pick-up) while he shot the
distinctive cover the
Stoney End album.
Feinstein passed away
yesterday at his home
in Upstate New York at
the age of 80. Our
original profile of
Barry Feinstein, first
published here in
2009, is below. |
About the Photographer
In 1970, noted
photographer Barry Feinstein was called upon to shoot the cover of
Stoney End.
Guided by the design
concept of his business
associate Tom Wilkes,
Feinstein masterfully captured an image of Barbra Streisand that has
since become a classic.
But
Stoney End was not the only time the
talented photographer shot an iconic album cover. Around the same
time as the
Stoney End photo shoot, Feinstein was behind the
camera when Janis Joplin sat for the cover of her last album,
Pearl.

Feinstein has worked with many artists. He is perhaps best known
for his photographic portraits of Bob Dylan. One of Feinstein's
images was used as the cover of Dylan's album, The Times They Are
A-Changin'.
