Tony Bennett An American Classic

Barbra to Perform with Tony Bennett

News/September 2006

It's as classic a match up as you're likely to see. Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand, two veterans of the recording industry, recently teamed up for a pair of projects. Barbra appears on Bennett's new album, "Duets" performing in a duet of "Smile." Both artists got together again to film a separate version of the song which appears on Bennett's companion television special, "Tony Bennett: An American Classic."

"Today Show" Airs First Preview

September 27, 2006
The release of Tony Bennett's new album, which has already climbed to # 1 on the charts, seems to be earning as much press as Barbra's own upcoming concerts. Bennett's publicity machine was in high gear this morning when NBC's Today Show broadcast the first clips from his TV special, including video of Barbra's performance on the show. The special, Tony Bennett An American Classic, will air on NBC November 21 and will be directed by Academy Award winner Rob Marshall (Chicago). This will mark Barbra's first collaboration with Marshall, who was behind the camera as she and Tony performed their duet together. The special was filmed (rather than video taped), which will provide a classic cinematic look to this sure-fire ratings blockbuster.

Barbra's Liner Notes for Tony

September 26, 2006
It took four decades to get these two legendary singers on the same album, and the resulting duet is delightful. Barbra and Tony Bennett's version of "Smile" is included on Tony's new CD, released today. The liner notes contain a special personal message from Barbra to Tony. If you are a Tony Bennett fan, you'll receive a bonus DVD if you shop at Target. Unfortunately, the Streisand session is not included, but will be shown on Tony Bennett's TV special November 21.

Sony BMG Music Releases Full-length Preview of "Smile"

September 19, 2006
It is one of the most anticipated vocal pairings since Barbra sang on Sinatra's "Duets" album some years ago. It's Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett performing the Charlie Chaplin ballad, "Smile." Sony Music has officially released the full length duet for on-line previews today. The track will be featured on Tony Bennett's forthcoming compilation CD called, fittingly, "Tony Bennett Duets." The album will be available in stores on September 26. Until then, go to the Sony/BMG Music website to hear the complete version of this extraordinary performance.

Streisand and Bennett to Perform on NBC November 21

September 1, 2006
It'll be a taped appearance, but no less exciting when Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett perform a duet of "Smile" on his NBC television special November 21. Streisand and Bennett recently recorded the video duet which will surely be the centerpiece of Tony's 80th birthday tribute show. Barbra just loves performing "Smile" ever since she included it on "The Movie Album." She sang the ballad in front of live audiences twice since the album's release (on Oprah, and during an Andre Agassi benefit in Las Vegas). No doubt, fans around the continent will get a chance to see Barbra do it again when she hits the road with her North American concert tour this fall.

Tony Presented Barbra with First Grammy
Barbra Streisand currently appears on a new CD, performing with an old friend. The vocal pairing of Barbra with Tony Bennett on his new CD, "Duets'," is the highlight among an extraordinary collection of artists chosen to perform with Bennett. And even though recording together ("Smile") was a new experience for both Barbra and Tony, their acquaintance is as old as both of their impressive careers. In fact, their first professional association made entertainment history back in 1964. Barbra was up for a Grammy, her very first. She won as Best Female Vocal Performance for "The Barbra Streisand Album." The presenter was none other than Mr. Tony Bennett himself.
