Judge Stanley Murdoch in "Nuts"

February 6, 2009
At the time he was chosen to play compassionate judge Stanley Murdoch opposite Barbra Streisand in "Nuts," James Whitmore was already considered one of Hollywood's, and Broadway's finest actors. He made a name for himself on the New York stage as far back as 1948 when he won a Tony award for his first play, "Command Decision." Subsequent stage performances would earn Whitmore further acclaim as a solo performer, perhaps most memorably as Theodore Roosevelt in the 1977's "Bully."

An actor of amazing versatility, Whitmore conquered film and television as well. His TV credits included appearances on "The Twilight Zone," "Dr. Kildare" and "Gunsmoke." His most recent guest shot was on a 2007 episode of "CSI: Las Vegas."

On the silver screen, Whitmore played many memorable supporting character parts. He was delightful opposite Jim Carrey in the 2001 film, "The Majestic." He also made appearances in such acclaimed films as "The Shawshank Redemption," Tora! Tora! Tora!" and the original "Planet of the Apes."

In "Nuts," Whitmore's character, Judge Murdoch, decides the fate of Claudia Draper, deeming her mentally sound and able to defend herself in a subsequent manslaughter trial. Whitmore, together with Richard Dreyfus, Karl Malden and Maureen Stapleton comprised the most illustrious supporting cast of veteran actors in any Streisand film.

Incidentally, Whitmore's second wife was noted actress, Audra Lindley. You'll remember Lindley as Mrs. Roper from the television sitcom, "Three's Company." Their grandson, Matty Whitmore, was a contestant on last season's "Survivor."
