Four-time Oscar nominee Peter Yates, the man who directed Barbra Streisand in the 1974 comedy, "For Pete's Sake" passed away at his home in the U.K. yesterday. He was 81.

When "For Pete's Sake" was released, hopes were high that its success would match that of Barbra's previous comedy, "What's Up, Doc?". While not an enormous hit at the box office, Peter Yates and producer Martin Erlichman still managed to turn "For Pete's Sake" into a delightful comedy that remains a favorite with many Streisand fans.

The film's star, promoted as "Zany Barbra" was supported by a truly eclectic cast of characters. Among those appearing in "For Pete's Sake were a modestly known actor (Michael Sarrazin), a legendary actress of American Yiddish theatre (Molly Picon) and a bona fide Oscar winner (Estelle Parsons).

Yates directed some of Hollywood's finest stars: Cher in "Suspect," Jacqueline Bisset and Nick Nolte in "The Deep," Steve McQueen in "Bullitt" and Dennis Quaid in "Breaking Away" to name a few.

For both "Bullitt" and "Breaking Away," Yates received Best Director and Best Picture Oscar nominations.
